Your eye exam may consist of a variety of tests designed to reveal any visual or eye abnormalities.

The most common tests that we perform are listed below:

Visual Acuity:

Most people are familiar with the test for visual acuity. This is where we ask you to read letters, numbers or identify objects from cards at varying distances from you. This test is usually performed on each eye separately and determines how well you see at near and far distances.

Visual Field:

In this test we test for peripheral vision loss by having you stare straight ahead and then slowly moving an object into your visual field from different angles. You tell us when you first see the object and from this we can determine if your visual field is normal for your age or not.

Ophthalmoscope:

Your doctor may look at the internal structures of your eye using an instrument called an ophthalmoscope. This test may be performed after your pupils have been dilated with eye drops so that the doctor can get a better look.

Slit Lamp Exam:

A slit lamp consists of microscope with a bright light attached that shines directly into your eye. Using the slit lamp, your doctor can view eye structures such as cornea, iris, and lens under high magnification. Sometimes the slit lamp can also be used to look at the vitreous and the back of the eye.

Tonometry:

Tonometry is used to measure the pressure inside your eye. You may hear this referred to as your intra ocular pressure. The test is usually used to screen for glaucoma and may take several forms. In some methods a tiny puff of air is blow directly onto your eyeball and sensitive measuring devices record the amount of flattening that occurs. The higher the pressure in your eye, the less flattening will occur.

Other methods of tonometry may require a probe to be placed directly against the side of the eye. In this case an anesthetic drop is applied so that the procedure does not cause discomfort.

Refraction:

This test helps your doctor determine the level and type of correction you need. While looking through a special device called a phoroptor or refractor, you will be asked to look at a chart while your doctor changes the lenses in the device. You will be asked to tell your doctor when you see clearly and when you do not.

Color Vision:

Color blindness occurs in different ways. As an example, you might be unable to distinguish between blue and green, or red and purple. To determine if you have color blindness and what colors are affected, you'll be shown patterns and backgrounds of varying colors. These may contain symbols you'll be asked to identify. If the symbols aren't apparent, you might be deficient in the color being tested.
